Amar Mahal Palace sits on a hilltop above the Tawi River, its red turrets and Rhenish spire visible from much of northern Jammu. The palace was built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and converted into a museum after the last Dogra ruler, Karan Singh, donated it to a public trust.
The museum contains a portrait gallery of the Dogra dynasty, a good collection of Pahari and Dogra miniature paintings, and a library with manuscripts. The throne room and original furnishings give a vivid sense of the court's ambition. The hillside location provides excellent views over the city and the plains stretching south toward Punjab.
