The Moonland viewpoint is not a formal monument, just the stretch of road east of Lamayuru where the landscape opens onto pale, folded, heavily eroded hills. The nickname is overused in Ladakh travel talk, but here it makes sense: the slopes look dry, powdery, and oddly cratered, especially when the sun is low.
Stop briefly rather than rushing past in the car. The view is best in early morning or late afternoon, when shadows reveal the shapes of the ridges. Do not scramble far onto the slopes; they erode easily and are steeper than they look from the road.
