The road reaches Karsha and Sani easily; the track to Stongde and Zangla is rougher but manageable in dry conditions. Phugtal is at the end of a very rough track into the Lungnak Valley and then requires a 2-hour walk; allow a full day from Padum.
For trekking, most serious routes require a guide and pack ponies (horses or yaks) for carrying gear and supplies. Guides and ponies can be arranged in Padum, though it helps to book in advance for summer. Treks typically need 3 to 14 days depending on the route.
Motorcycles can be hired in Padum for exploring the main valley independently. The roads are rough and elevation effects are significant — a puncture 30 kilometres from town is a serious inconvenience.
