Shree Shakti Prasad

Brahmin-run vegetarian restaurant serving traditional thali on the car street

One of the traditional Brahmin restaurants on and near the car street, Shree Shakti Prasad serves vegetarian thali meals throughout the day. The thali is classic Karnataka Brahmin cooking — rice, sambar, rasam, kootu (a dry vegetable curry), pickle, papad, and a sweet — served on a steel plate with multiple small bowls. The masala dosa in the morning is excellent.

There is no alcohol and the menu is entirely vegetarian, keeping with the norms of the temple town. Prices are low, the portions are generous, and the cooking is home-style rather than restaurant-adapted. This is the kind of meal the pilgrims eat, and it is better than most of the tourist food on the beaches.
