Akkana Basadi

Akkana Basadi is a Jain temple in the town of Sravanabelagola, built during the Hoysala period in the 12th century. It is one of the most complete medieval Jain temples in the region, with fine carved panels on the exterior and a well-preserved interior shrine. The name means "temple of the elder sister" and refers to the woman who commissioned it — a reminder that wealthy women were significant patrons of religious architecture in medieval Karnataka.

The temple is in the town itself, at the foot of the hills, and makes a good complement to the climb up Vindhyagiri. It is an active temple and should be approached with the usual courtesies — remove shoes, dress modestly. The carving quality is high and the building is small enough to examine carefully in 20–30 minutes.

A story
Akkana Basadi was built in 1181 AD by Achiyakka, the wife of a minister in the Hoysala court, and is unusual for a monument of this era: it is named after a woman (akkana means "elder sister" in Kannada), built by a woman, and dedicated by a woman. The Hoysala period produced extraordinary temple architecture in Karnataka, and while Akkana Basadi is simpler than the great Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu, it shares their fine stone carving.
