St. Mary's Church at Champakulam is one of the old Christian landmarks of the Alappuzha backwaters. Local tradition links it with St. Thomas, and whether or not you come for the legend, the church gives a useful glimpse of Kerala's long Syriac Christian presence away from the beach and houseboat routes.
