Thalassery, still often called Tellicherry, is one of north Kerala's most characterful coastal towns. It has a British fort above the Arabian Sea, old Muslim trading families, temple-style mosque architecture, and a food culture that makes biryani a serious reason to stop.
The town's history is unusually dense. Early Malayalam newspapers and novels came out of Thalassery, cricket took root here under colonial patronage, and the local circus tradition produced trainers and performers known across India. The result is a place that feels more layered than its size suggests.
Most visitors come for a slow day of fort walls, sea views, old religious buildings, and eating. The best route keeps close to the centre: start at Thalassery Fort, walk toward Overbury's Folly and the old pier, then head inland for Odathil Mosque and the older temples.
