Janardhana Swami Temple

The Janardhana Swami Temple sits on the cliff top above Papanasam Beach, and its 2,000-year history gives Varkala a different weight from most Kerala beach towns. This is not a backpacker resort that happens to have a temple — it is an ancient pilgrimage site that also has backpackers. The distinction matters: the beach below is considered sacred, and the rituals performed there by Hindu pilgrims are a genuine part of daily life here, not a performance for visitors.

Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the main sanctum, but the outer precincts, the steps down to the beach, and the view from the clifftop are all accessible. The best time to visit is early morning, when the pilgrimage rituals are underway and the light is still low over the water. The temple complex is surrounded by smaller shrines and devotional stalls that have been here for centuries.

A story
The Janardhana Swami Temple is believed to be over 2,000 years old, making it one of the oldest continuously worshipped temples in Kerala. According to tradition, the presiding deity — Vishnu in the form of Janardhana — appeared here spontaneously, which gives the site a special sanctity. Pilgrims believe that performing the final rites (*pitru tharpanam*) for the dead at Papanasam Beach below absolves all ancestral sins.
