Papanasam Beach

Papanasam Beach is the main beach at Varkala, and it is unlike most Kerala beaches in having both genuine spiritual significance and practical appeal. The red laterite cliff that towers behind it is immediately striking — a dramatic natural wall that makes this beach look like nowhere else in Kerala.

The beach itself is broad, golden, and relatively clean. Swimming is generally safe between October and April; the currents can be strong and the surf rough during and after the monsoon. A freshwater spring at the cliff base is considered holy. The cliff top above holds the cliff-path restaurants, guesthouses, and shops, but the beach below remains calmer and more natural. Walk north from the main beach for less crowded stretches.

A story
The name Papanasam means 'destroyer of sins' in Sanskrit. According to local belief, bathing in the sea at this specific stretch of beach — at the foot of the cliff, near where a freshwater spring emerges — washes away the sins of a lifetime. Pilgrims come from across Kerala to perform *pitru tharpanam* (offerings for deceased ancestors) here, which is why you will see people performing rituals in full dress at the water's edge regardless of the tourist activity around them.
