Sivagiri Mutt

Sivagiri Mutt, about 3 km from the main cliff area, is the ashram and samadhi (tomb) of Sree Narayana Guru — one of Kerala's most important social reformers and spiritual teachers. Guru established this mutt in the Sivagiri hills in 1904 and lived here until his death in 1928. His philosophy of caste equality and universal education was influential across South India and remains deeply revered in Kerala.

The complex includes the main shrine, a school, and a museum of Guru's life and teaching. The setting — on a wooded hill above the surrounding landscape — is peaceful. The annual Sivagiri pilgrimage in late December draws enormous crowds; at any other time it is quiet and reflective. Auto-rickshaws from the cliff area take about 10 minutes.

A story
Sree Narayana Guru established Sivagiri Mutt in 1904 as a place of spiritual retreat, but also as a demonstration of his reformist philosophy: that education, cleanliness, and devotion mattered more than caste. In a region deeply stratified by the caste system, his teaching that 'one caste, one religion, one God for man' was revolutionary. The annual pilgrimage to Sivagiri — held in late December, drawing hundreds of thousands of devotees — is one of Kerala's largest religious gatherings.
