Sasbahu Temples

Pair of 11th-century temples on the fort ridge, admired for intricate carving and open views.

The Sasbahu Temples are among the most rewarding stops on the fort plateau. They are partly ruined, but the carving is still delicate and the setting is superb, with views across the city and enough space to appreciate the twin structures without being crushed by crowds.

They sit away from the main palace, so do not skip them if you have already paid your fort entry. The temples are especially good for travellers who enjoy architectural detail: pillars, ceiling panels, miniature figures and the way the surviving stonework filters light.

A story
The name sounds like a joke about a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, but it is generally understood as a corruption of Sahastrabahu, a form associated with Vishnu. The folk name stuck, which is why one of Gwalior's finest temple groups now has one of its most memorable labels.
