Dhuandhar Falls

Dhuandhar Falls sits at the entry to the Bhedaghat gorge, where the Narmada drops about 10 metres over a rocky ledge in a wide curtain of white water. The falls are best seen from the cliffs on either bank, where viewpoints give a full perspective on the width and power of the drop. A ropeway crosses just above the falls and gives an aerial view directly over the cascade.

The falls are more impressive during and just after the monsoon (July to September) when the river is high and the volume of water is much greater. In the dry season (November to April) the flow is reduced but the marble gorge below is more accessible by boat. The combination of Dhuandhar Falls and the Marble Rocks gorge makes Bhedaghat a two-hour excursion from Jabalpur worth fitting into any itinerary.

A story
"Dhuandhar" means "smoke cascade" in Hindi — a reference to the mist and spray that hang perpetually above the falls. The Narmada River, sacred to Hindus, makes a dramatic entrance here into the Marble Rocks gorge. The name encapsulates the sensory experience: the roar of the falls is audible before the waterfall is visible, and the spray-cloud catches the light at sunrise and sunset.
