Getting There

By air: Aurangabad Airport (IATA: IXU), also called Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Airport, is 10 km east of the city centre. IndiGo and Air India operate multiple daily flights from Mumbai (around 1 hour) and at least one daily flight from Delhi (around 2 hours). Fares are reasonable if booked in advance; the airport is small and uncongested. Auto-rickshaws and prepaid taxis connect the airport to the city centre in around 20–30 minutes.

By train: The best overnight option from Mumbai is the Tapovan Express (departs Mumbai CST, arrives Aurangabad in approximately 7.5 hours) or the Devagiri Express (departs Mumbai CST in the evening, arrives early morning — around 7–8 hours). Booking in advance is strongly recommended, especially in season. The station, Aurangabad Railway Station, is centrally located. From Pune there are several daily trains, around 5–6 hours.

By bus: MSRTC (Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation) operates regular buses from Mumbai (7–8 hours, both ordinary and semi-luxury), Pune (5–6 hours), Nashik (3 hours), and Jalgaon (for connections from Ajanta direction). Private operators also run overnight Volvo-type buses from Mumbai and Pune — these are often more comfortable than the state buses and worth paying the premium for a night journey.

By road: Aurangabad is about 370 km from Mumbai via the Pune–Aurangabad highway (NH52); driving takes 6–7 hours. The road via Nashik is slightly longer but more scenic.
