Worli

A neighbourhood in the middle of the city that has undergone the most visible transformation in Mumbai over the past two decades — from a fishing village and industrial area to one of the primary locations for luxury residential towers, corporate offices, and the new Mumbai that the city's developers are building for its finance-sector elite. The contrast between the old Worli Koliwada fishing village — a settlement of the original Koli fisherfolk, with painted boats drawn up on the beach and fish drying on racks — and the gleaming towers immediately behind it is as sharp as anything in the city.

The Bandra-Worli Sea Link arrives here from the north, the six-kilometre cable-stayed bridge across Mahim Bay that transformed travel times between the western suburbs and South Mumbai. The bridge itself is most dramatic after dark when it is lit up. The Haji Ali Dargah — the white marble tomb of a Muslim saint, sitting on a rocky islet accessible only at low tide via a narrow causeway — lies off the Worli seafront, one of the most photographed images in Mumbai.
