Sula Vineyards

Sula Vineyards is India's largest winery and the most visited, located about 14 km northwest of Nashik city on the shores of the Gangapur reservoir. The estate runs tours and tastings most days, and its outdoor amphitheatre hosts the annual SulaFest in late January — a wine and music festival that draws visitors from across India.

The vineyard trail and the tasting room are open to walk-ins, though booking is recommended during festival season and on weekends. Sula grows Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc, among others. Several other wineries operate nearby — York Winery is popular for its smaller, boutique feel — and the area west of town is worth an afternoon even if wine is not your primary interest, for the reservoir views and the relative quiet of the Gangapur hills.

A story
The vine at Nashik's latitude (around 20°N) should not work — viticulture textbooks said tropical India was too warm and humid. Sula's founders, working in the early 2000s, proved the textbooks wrong by taking advantage of Nashik's elevation (600m), the diurnal temperature swing between the hot day and cool night, and irrigation from the Gangapur reservoir. India now has a substantial wine industry, and Nashik supplies the grapes for most of it.
