Trimbakeshwar lies 28 km from Nashik and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the most sacred Shiva shrines in India. What makes this one unusual is that its lingam has three faces representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — all other Jyotirlingas have Shiva alone as the main deity.
The temple, built in black stone by the Peshwa ruler Nana Saheb, is known for its detailed sculpture and sits at the foot of Brahmagiri mountain, where the Godavari River originates. The Godavari flows from here all the way across the Deccan to meet the sea near Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh. Non-Hindus may not be allowed into the inner sanctum but can admire the temple exterior and the surrounding ghats.
