A modest stone Shiva temple toward the eastern edge of the Raigad plateau, built by Shivaji during his reign. The bull Nandi faces the lingam in the inner sanctum, and an inscription over the doorway records that the temple was completed in 1674, the year of Shivaji's coronation. Outside, a stone platform marks the samadhi (cenotaph) where his ashes are said to have been interred after his death in 1680. A statue of Shivaji's dog Waghya, who legend says leapt onto the funeral pyre, stands nearby.
For Maharashtrians the spot is something close to a pilgrimage. Visitors remove their shoes; mornings are quiet, afternoons busy with school groups and devotees.
