Takmak Tok

The cliff at the western edge of the fort, used for executions

The cliff at the western corner of the fort plateau, with one of the most dramatic views in Maharashtra: a near-vertical drop into the valleys below, with the Sahyadri ranges fading into haze on the horizon. On a clear day the sea is visible far to the west.

The wind here can be ferocious, especially in monsoon. A small viewing area marks the edge; there is no railing, and accidents happen. Sunrise from this point, if you have made the climb early, is unforgettable.

A story
Takmak Tok is a sheer drop of several hundred metres from the western plateau. In Shivaji's time, condemned prisoners were thrown from the edge; the local name translates roughly as 'the looking-down point'. The viewing platform is unfenced — keep small children well back.
