Thane is one of the most accessible places from Mumbai: the fast and frequent trains on the Central Railway line from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) reach Thane in about 40–50 minutes. Trains depart every few minutes during peak hours. The station is large and central, within walking distance of Masunda Lake.
By road, Thane is about 35 kilometres from central Mumbai via the Eastern Express Highway or the Mumbai-Agra National Highway; journey times vary enormously by traffic, from 45 minutes to well over two hours at peak times. Auto-rickshaws operate throughout Thane and are the standard way to get around within the city. They use meters; the fares are inexpensive.
