Masunda Lake (Talao Pali)

Masunda Lake, also called Talao Pali, is the focal point of Thane's city centre — a large lake ringed by a 1.5-kilometre walking promenade that becomes intensely social in the evenings. Families picnic on the banks, children play in the gardens, and the lake itself hosts paddle boats for hire. The surrounding Talao Pali park has manicured gardens and is one of the most pleasant public spaces in any Mumbai satellite city.

The best time to visit is in the hour before sunset, when the light turns the water orange and the promenade fills with walkers and vendors. The gardens are maintained well and the area around the lake is safe. The lake is within easy walking distance of Thane railway station, which makes it a straightforward stop on arrival.

A story
Masunda Lake sits almost exactly in the centre of what is now a city of nearly two million people — a remarkable piece of urban survival. The lake was not preserved by design: development simply grew around it too quickly for anyone to drain it, and by the time planners might have considered it, it had become too central to Thane's identity to remove. The evening promenade around its banks, called Masunda Talao, is where Thane residents of all ages gather as the heat of the day eases.
