People's Museum

The People's Museum is one of the most significant ethnographic collections in Manipur, and by far the most important cultural sight in Kakching. Established in 1981, it holds nearly 1,200 items spanning an enormous sweep of the region's history: stone-age tools, bronze implements, medieval manuscripts, tribal headgear, ritual objects, and artifacts from both the valley Meitei culture and the various hill communities of the surrounding districts.

What makes the museum distinctive is its local character. Unlike the bigger state collections in Imphal, this one was assembled by people of Kakching itself, and it reflects the particular history of this part of Manipur — a zone where the agricultural Meitei lowlanders and the various hill communities have traded, clashed, and intermingled for centuries. Allow at least an hour to do the collection justice.

A story
The museum was established in 1981 by local scholars determined to preserve records of Manipur's pre-colonial culture before oral traditions died out. Among its nearly 1,200 items are stone-age tools excavated from the hills around Kakching, medieval manuscripts written on dried palm leaves, and the ceremonial headgear of chiefs from hill tribes who had little contact with the Meitei kingdoms of the valley. The breadth of the collection is remarkable for a district-level museum.
