Southeastern Manipur town with an organized market culture, People's Museum, and gardens near Imphal.
Kakching is the second largest town in Manipur, situated in the southeastern part of the state about 44 kilometres from Imphal and 70 kilometres from the border with Myanmar. The town was declared the cleanest city in Northeast India in 2018, and it shows — the streets are unusually well-organized for a town of this size, and the market culture is lively without being chaotic.
The People's Museum is the cultural centrepiece: nearly 1,200 rare manuscripts, stone-age tools, tribal headgear, and medieval artefacts that reflect the complex heritage of this corner of Manipur. Outside the museum, the Kakching Garden at Uyok Ching on the Sekmai River is the town's social heart — a riverside park with a Hindu temple and traditional Meitei shrine sitting side by side.
The Kakching Market is worth visiting for its Myanmar imports and local produce, especially the fermented bamboo shoot (soibum) and woven bamboo handicrafts. In the evenings, the town's bars serve Yu, a rice wine fermented locally and very similar to Japanese sake — a social tradition that is distinctly Manipuri.

Bars and Cafes
Kakching's bar culture is genuinely distinctive. The local drink is Yu, a rice wine fermented according to traditional methods that produces something close to Japanese sake in flavour — mild, slightly earthy, served warm or at room temperature. Hundreds of small bars around town serve Yu alongside simple food, and the drinking culture is communal and relaxed. A bar tab costs almost nothing by any standard.
The bars operate like social clubs: regulars return to the same place, drinking with the same friends. They generally open in the late afternoon around 4 pm and close around 11 pm. The clientele is predominantly male, though this has been gradually shifting. Bar-hopping is not the local style — you find your place and stay.

When to Go
Kakching is most pleasant between October and April, when the monsoon has ended and temperatures are comfortable. The winter months of November to February are cool and dry — good walking weather, with clear skies. The summer months from March to May are warm but manageable at Kakching's elevation.
Avoid the monsoon season from June to September if possible. The region receives heavy rainfall and travel in the hill areas can become difficult. The town itself functions normally, but roads to nearby attractions may be affected.
