Sailashree Palace

Sailashree Palace is the most prominent architectural legacy of the Patna kingdom in Balangir town. Built in the early 20th century by the Maharaja, it combines Indo-Saracenic features with the colonial architectural tastes of the period. The palace complex stands as a reminder that Balangir was once a princely capital with its own distinct court culture, before the political reorganisation of India brought the era of the princely states to an end.

Access to the interior is limited, but the exterior and grounds are worth a look for anyone with an interest in the region's history. The palace sits in an area of town that still has a somewhat different character from the modern commercial centre — quieter, with wider roads and older buildings.

A story
The palace was built by the last ruling Maharaja of Patna State in the early 20th century, blending Indo-Saracenic and colonial styles. After the princely states merged with Odisha in 1948, it passed out of royal hands — a remnant of the Chauhan dynasty's final generation.
