Things to Do

Balangir district is scattered with ancient temple sites from the Chauhan era, most requiring a day trip from the district headquarters. In town, the Patneswari Temple and Samaleswari Temple are the main religious sites, while Sailashree Palace recalls the district's royal past. The star day-trip attraction is Ranipur Jharial, one of only four circular 64-yogini temple enclosures in India, combined with around 50 other temples at the site. Patnagarh, the old capital of the Patna kingdom, has Chalukyan-style temples dating to the 12th century. For wildlife, Turekela (98 km) offers forest camping with sightings of tigers, deer, and bears.
