Koraput

Eastern Ghats town with tribal culture, forest roads, waterfalls, and Odisha's highest peak nearby.

Koraput is a hill town in southern Odisha, close to the borders with Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The town itself is a practical base rather than a beauty spot, but the surrounding country is one of Odisha's strongest inland travel areas: forested roads, Adivasi culture, broad reservoirs, waterfalls, and high Eastern Ghats scenery.

Start in town with Sabara Srikhetra Jagannath Temple and the Tribal Museum, which give useful context before heading into the district. The temple is modern, but it matters locally because it opens the Jagannath tradition beyond the caste restrictions historically associated with Puri.

The best day trips are outdoors. Kolab Dam gives an easy reservoir view close to town, while Deomali, Odisha's highest peak, is the big landscape goal if you have a vehicle and a full day. Duduma Waterfalls is farther, but the scale of the Machkund River gorge makes it one of the district's most memorable sights.

Koraput rewards travellers who are comfortable with slower transport and thin tourist infrastructure. It is not a casual add-on to the Bhubaneswar-Puri-Konark circuit, but if you are already in southern Odisha or coming overland from Visakhapatnam, a spare day here is much better spent in the hills than in a hotel lobby.

Getting There

Koraput has rail links to Visakhapatnam and Bhubaneswar. The daytime railway from the Andhra side is slow but scenic, climbing through the Eastern Ghats and Araku Valley before reaching Koraput.

By road, Koraput is reached from Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Rayagada, and Jeypore by winding hill roads. The drives can be beautiful, especially after the monsoon, but allow extra time and avoid pushing through the ghat sections after dark if you are not used to them.
