Shahpur Kandi Fort

Perched on a rocky spur above the Ravi River where it cuts through the Shivalik Hills, Shahpur Kandi Fort is the most dramatic historic site in the Pathankot district. The fort dates to the era of the Pathania Rajput chiefs and occupies a commanding position overlooking the deep river gorge, with views stretching across the green hills toward Himachal Pradesh.

The ruins themselves are atmospheric rather than grand — weathered stone walls, crumbling towers, and overgrown courtyards — but the setting more than compensates. The road down to the river from the fort passes through thick forest, and the Ravi below is wide and clear here before it joins the Ranjit Sagar reservoir. Shahpur Kandi is about eight kilometres from Pathankot town; shared jeeps and autos run there, or you can take a taxi and combine it with the dam.

A story
The fort was built by the Pathania Rajput chiefs who ruled this stretch of the Ravi River gorge for centuries. During the colonial period it served as a strategic outpost; today the views from its crumbling ramparts over the Ravi gorge and the Ranjit Sagar backwaters below are the main reward for the climb.
