Mukteshwar Temple

Mukteshwar Temple is one of Pathankot's most visited religious sites, dedicated to Lord Shiva and set on the edge of town where the plains begin to rise toward the Shivalik Hills. The compound is shaded by large trees and is busy with local pilgrims throughout the year, especially on Mondays and during the festival of Shivaratri.

The temple is a working place of worship rather than a monument, and visiting requires the usual respect for dress and conduct. The atmosphere is particularly lively during the early morning puja, when the smell of incense and flowers fills the courtyard and the bells carry across the surrounding neighbourhood. From the temple compound there are views toward the hills to the north and across the flat town to the south.

A story
The temple sits where a seasonal stream joins the main road to the hills, and is associated with the local Mukteshwar festival held in late autumn, when devotees walk from across the district to bathe in the stream and offer prayers. The temple tank fills with pilgrims on festival days when the town falls quiet and the surrounding fields are carpeted with vendors selling marigolds and sweets.
