A camel safari into the Thar Desert is the main reason most visitors come to Jaisalmer. Trips range from a few hours to several days, ending with a night camped under very bright stars. Sam Sand Dunes, about 40 kilometres west, is the most popular base — but it can get crowded, and the sunsets are more memorable if you go further out.
Book through your guesthouse or a recommended agency rather than accepting approaches from touts. Agree on everything in advance: the itinerary, the number of camels, where you will sleep, whether meals are included. If you have never ridden a camel before, start short — the gait is less comfortable than it looks and your legs will feel it the next day.
