Sam Sand Dunes

The most accessible sand dunes in the Thar Desert, popular for sunset camel rides

Sam Sand Dunes, about 40 kilometres west of Jaisalmer near the Pakistani border, are the most visited desert landscape in Rajasthan. The dunes rise to around 30 metres and offer a classic image of the Thar Desert: rolling sand ridges, a clear horizon, and sunsets that turn the sand deep orange. Camel rides are available from the moment you arrive, and several desert camps have set up along the dune edges offering overnight stays with folk music performances in the evenings.

The downside is the crowds, particularly from around 3pm onwards when day-trippers from Jaisalmer arrive. The camps can feel more like a festival than a desert retreat, with generators running, loud music, and organised entertainment. If a quieter experience is important to you, ask your operator about going to the dunes further north or east — places like Khuri or Sham — where the landscape is equally beautiful and the tourist infrastructure is much lighter.

That said, Sam at sunrise is genuinely peaceful. If you are staying in one of the camps overnight, get up before dawn, walk away from the camp, and you will have the dunes to yourself. The light in the early morning is extraordinary.

A story
The dunes at Sam were used as a backdrop in several Bollywood films, which partly explains their fame — and their crowds. Indian honeymooners, day-trippers from Jodhpur, and package tourists arrive in convoys of jeeps every afternoon. If you want the desert to yourself, you have to go earlier or further.
