Kota Barrage is first of all a working piece of river engineering, controlling water from the Chambal, but in Kota it also functions as a public landmark. The long line of gates, the broad river and the spray during releases give the city a more expansive waterside scene than its dense streets suggest.
It is most interesting around monsoon and post-monsoon periods, when the river has force and the barrage feels less like infrastructure and more like theatre. Visit for the views and the sense of the Chambal's scale, then continue to Kota's palace and old-city sights for the historical side of town.
