Rumtek Monastery is one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist sites in Sikkim, set on a ridge across the valley from Gangtok. The complex is associated with the Karma Kagyu school, and its prayer halls, courtyards, and painted details give a clearer sense of Sikkim's Himalayan religious world than a quick stop at a city shrine.
The monastery is outside central Gangtok, so treat it as a half-day excursion rather than a casual walk-by. The drive is part of the pleasure when the weather is clear: the road climbs through villages and forest, with views back toward the city and, on lucky days, the higher mountains beyond.
