Sanga Choeling Monastery

One of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim, reached by a forest path

One of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim, Sanga Choeling was founded in the 17th century and sits on a forested hill about 10 kilometres from Pelling. Unlike the more-visited Pemayangtse, it receives relatively few tourists, giving it a quieter, more contemplative atmosphere.

The walk up through rhododendron and cardamom forest takes about 30 to 40 minutes from the nearest road. The monastery belongs to the Nyingma order and contains ancient murals and thangkas. Monks in residence will generally welcome visitors who arrive respectfully. The view from the monastery grounds across the valley is among the best in the area.

A story
Sanga Choeling was established in the 17th century by Lama Lhatsun Chempo, one of the three revered lamas who brought Tibetan Buddhism to Sikkim. The lama reportedly flew to the hilltop on a tiger — a story commemorated in a mural inside the monastery.
