Chennai is not a great city for bars — Tamil Nadu has a complicated relationship with alcohol, and the state government controls much of the liquor trade through its TASMAC shops. Decent bars exist but are mostly attached to five-star hotels. The city more than compensates on the coffee side: filter coffee is a serious local tradition, and the specialty cafe scene has grown significantly in recent years.
