Chennai is one of South India's major transport hubs, well connected by air, rail, and road.
By Air: Chennai International Airport (MAA) is in the Meenambakkam area, about 16 km southwest of the city centre. It handles both domestic and international flights with connections throughout India and to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and beyond. The Chennai Metro (Airport line) connects the airport directly to the city centre; the journey to the main metro interchange takes about 25 minutes. Prepaid taxis and app-based services (Uber, Ola) are available outside the terminal.
By Rail: Chennai has two major railway stations. Chennai Central (the grand Indo-Saracenic building in Perambur) handles most long-distance trains, including the prestigious express services to Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Bengaluru. Chennai Egmore station serves the southern Tamil Nadu routes, including trains to Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, and the coastal towns. Both stations are in the northern part of the city.
By Road: Long-distance bus services from across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states use the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) in Koyambedu, one of the largest bus terminals in Asia. Overnight buses from Bengaluru (6 hours) and other cities are widely available and reasonably comfortable.
