Established in 1857, the Government Museum at Egmore is one of the best museums in south India. The bronze gallery holds an outstanding collection of Chola bronzes from the 9th to 13th centuries — the finest of their kind. The archaeology section has exhibits from the Buddhist site at Amaravati (2nd century AD) and prehistoric finds from Tamil Nadu. Other sections cover geology, anthropology, numismatics, and zoology. Worth two hours at least.
