Murugan Idli Shop started in Madurai and expanded to Chennai, where it has become one of the most popular tiffin restaurants in the city. The focus is narrow: idli, dosa, and the accompaniments — sambar, three or four chutneys, podi (spiced lentil powder with ghee).
What makes Murugan's idli notable is the texture — lighter and softer than most, the result of careful fermentation and steaming. The sambar here is distinctly Madurai-style, sweeter and less tart than Chennai versions. The coconut chutney is made fresh throughout the day.
The restaurant fills from 7am for breakfast and again at lunchtime. The queues can be long but move quickly. Multiple branches operate around the city, with the Express Avenue and Mylapore locations often the easiest to reach.
