Fort St. George

Oldest surviving English fort in India, built 1644.

Built in 1644 by the British East India Company, Fort St George is the oldest surviving English fort in India. The fort complex now houses the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and government offices. The Fort Museum inside is open to visitors and contains portraits of colonial governors, artefacts from the early East India Company period, and memorabilia from the British era in Madras. The Cornwallis Cupola and St Mary's Church (1680, the oldest Anglican church in India) are within the fort.
