Maruthamalai Murugan Temple

Maruthamalai is a hilltop temple dedicated to Murugan, the Tamil war deity, set on a small rocky outcrop 12 km northwest of the city centre. The temple itself is modest but the setting is excellent — the hill rises steeply from the surrounding plain and the views over Coimbatore and toward the Nilgiri and Anamalai ranges are among the best within easy reach of the city.

The approach involves climbing 450 granite steps cut into the hillside, lined with vendors selling garlands and offerings. The temple is active throughout the year but particularly crowded during Thaipusam (January/February) and Skanda Sashti (October/November). Autos and taxis can drop you at the base of the steps from the city centre in about 30 minutes.

A story
The hilltop is covered with small shrines and votive offerings left by pilgrims who have climbed the 450 steps barefoot as an act of devotion. On festival days the steps are crowded from before dawn; the air is dense with incense and the sound of temple bells. The view from the top at sunrise, looking east over the city and south toward the Western Ghats, is worth the climb regardless of faith.
