Sree Avinashi Lingeshwara Temple

Avinashi, 29 km northeast of Coimbatore, is home to the Avinashi Lingeshwara Temple — one of the more important Shiva temples in western Tamil Nadu, mentioned in the ancient Tamil Thevarams. The temple tank is large and well-maintained, with the main gopuram reflected in its water in the mornings.

The temple is active and crowded on festival days, particularly during Shivaratri. It's accessible by bus from Coimbatore in about 45 minutes and can be combined with a visit to nearby Tiruppur for those interested in the textile manufacturing that dominates this part of Tamil Nadu.

A story
The temple's tank is famous in Tamil literature as the setting of a poem by the Sangam-era poet Tiruvalluvar. A legend holds that a garland of flowers thrown into the tank reappeared at the Rameswaram temple far to the south — establishing a mythological connection between two of the most important Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu.
