VOC Park and Zoo

VOC Park occupies a large green space in central Coimbatore and combines a municipal zoo with ornamental gardens, a boating lake, and an amusement area that makes it one of the city's main family destinations. The zoo is not large by Indian standards but has a reasonable collection of local wildlife including tigers, leopards, and the various deer species of the Western Ghats.

The park is best visited early morning when it's cool and the animals are active. Weekends draw large local crowds. The gardens around the zoo are a pleasant escape from the city's traffic — more useful for a quiet hour than as a major sight.

A story
The park is named after V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, a Tamil nationalist who launched a swadeshi (Indian-owned) shipping line in 1906 to challenge the British monopoly on sea trade from Tuticorin. The British imprisoned him twice and stripped him of his licence — but his attempt became one of the early symbols of economic resistance to colonial rule in South India.
