Kumbakonam is well connected within Tamil Nadu, less so internationally — most travellers arrive via Chennai or Trichy.
By train — Kumbakonam railway station is on the Chennai–Thanjavur line. Several daily trains run from Chennai Egmore (around 7 hours), Thanjavur (around 1 hour), and Trichy (around 2 hours). The station is a 20-minute walk south of the Mahamaham tank.
By bus — The Central Bus Station, just east of the centre, has frequent buses to Thanjavur, Trichy, Chidambaram, Karaikal, and Pondicherry, as well as longer-distance services to Chennai and Madurai.
By air — The nearest airport is Trichy (TRZ), around 90 km west, with domestic flights and a handful of international routes. Chennai (MAA), around 280 km north, is the main international gateway.
