Kumbakonam is a temple town in the Cauvery Delta, 40 km east of Thanjavur, and one of the most concentrated clusters of Dravidian temples in India. The town has over a dozen significant temples within walking distance of each other, including the Sarangapani Temple, the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple, and the smaller but exquisite ninth-century Nageswaraswamy Temple — each with gopurams rising above the town's rooftops.
The most important event here is the Mahamaham festival, held every 12 years when the waters of the Mahamaham tank are said to be spiritually charged. The 2016 festival drew over 3 million pilgrims. Even outside festival times, the large tank at the centre of town is a focal point for ritual bathing.
Kumbakonam's other claim to distinction is its coffee. The filter coffee here is widely considered among the best in Tamil Nadu, and the town's degree of coffee expertise rivals that of the more famous Madurai and Chennai establishments.
The town is easily visited from Thanjavur as a day trip, or as a stop on the temple circuit that includes the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram and Gangaikonda Cholapuram (35 km north), capital of the Chola empire in the 11th century.
