Kumbakonam is a temple town: in the central core, a dozen or more major Hindu temples sit within easy walking distance of each other and the great Mahamaham tank. Almost all are working temples open to non-Hindus in their outer courts, though the inner sanctums are typically restricted. Dress respectfully (covered legs and shoulders, shoes left at the entrance) and start early — the temples are at their best before the heat builds.
Two of the most important temples in South India lie just outside the town: Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, four kilometres west, and the Brihadisvara Temple of Gangaikonda Cholapuram, thirty-five kilometres north. Together with the great temple at Thanjavur, the three are inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list as the "Great Living Chola Temples."
