Chakrapani Temple

Vishnu temple where the deity is worshipped in the form of the discus

A rare temple in which Vishnu is worshipped not in human form but as the chakra, his discus weapon. The presiding image is an eight-armed disc held against a stone backdrop, an iconographic form found in very few places in India.

The site sits on the bank of the Cauvery a short walk west of the Sarangapani Temple and has a pleasantly contained scale — a single high-walled enclosure, a tank, and a modest gopuram. The story goes that Shiva himself bowed to the Chakra here, an event commemorated in a separate small shrine within the precinct.
