Jigarthanda — literally "cold heart" in Urdu — is Madurai's signature summer drink: a cold milk-based concoction with china-grass jelly, almond gum (badam pisin), kulfi-style ice cream and a top swirl of rose syrup. The Famous Jigarthanda shop on East Masi Street is the original, run by the same Khan family since 1977.
A standard "single" is enough for one person; a "special" with extra jelly and ice cream is closer to a meal. Open from late morning to mid evening, with queues out the door from 4pm.
