Madurai is one of the great pilgrim cities of south India, and almost everything to do here radiates out from the Meenakshi Amman Temple at the centre. The four concentric streets around the temple — Adi, Chithirai, Avani Moola and Masi — preserve the city's medieval grid pattern, and a slow walk through them is half the experience. The Nayak palace and the Gandhi Museum are the other major monuments; the markets, the tank, and the rock-cut shrines outside the city fill out a proper two or three day visit.
