DakshinaChitra is a living history museum of South Indian architecture and crafts, set on a 4-hectare site on the East Coast Road about 25 kilometres north of Mahabalipuram. The museum has relocated traditional houses from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, reassembling them in a compound that reads like a village. Each house is furnished with period objects and attended by artisans demonstrating traditional crafts.
The exhibits cover weaving, pottery, woodwork, and other crafts in working demonstrations rather than static displays. The reconstructed architecture ranges from a Brahmin house from the Kaveri delta to a Kerala tharavad, allowing close study of how building traditions varied across the peninsula. It's a worthwhile stop on the drive between Chennai and Mahabalipuram — allow at least two hours. Open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Monday.
