The Varaha Cave Temple (also known as the Adivaraha Cave) is a rock-cut mandapa from the late 7th century featuring four relief panels of exceptional quality. The principal panel shows Vishnu in his Varaha (boar) incarnation, lifting the earth goddess Bhudevi from the cosmic ocean. The figure is powerfully rendered — the boar-headed god massive and calm, the earth goddess small and serene on his arm.
The other panels show Trivikrama (Vishnu spanning the three worlds), Gajalakshmi (Lakshmi bathed by elephants), and Durga. The cave is smaller than the Mahishasuramardini cave but the carving quality is among the best in the entire complex. It sits close to the main road and is easily combined with Arjuna's Penance, which is almost directly adjacent.
