New Jerusalem Church

Early 18th-century Protestant church from Tranquebar's Danish missionary period

New Jerusalem Church was built in 1718 by the German missionary Bartholomaus Ziegenbalg, one of the key figures in Tranquebar's Danish-era Christian history. Its cross-shaped plan, memorial plaques, and graves make it more than a simple colonial church.

Visit it together with Fort Dansborg and the old coastal streets of Tharangambadi. The church helps explain the town's unusual mix of Tamil, Danish, and missionary history.
