Chotiwala Restaurant

Chotiwala is one of the most recognisable restaurants in Haridwar, famous for the painted statue of a rotund man in a topknot (the "chotiwala" — man with a pigtail) that sits outside welcoming guests. It has been operating near Har Ki Pauri for decades and serves a comprehensive North Indian vegetarian menu at very reasonable prices.

The thali is the best order — a large plate with several curries, dal, rice, roti, and sweets. The paneer dishes are reliable, and the lassi is good. The restaurant is popular with both pilgrims and tourists, so service can be slow at peak times. Two branches have appeared claiming the same name and decoration, but the original facing the ghat is the better one.
